EU allocates 7 million euros to support Libya Stabilization Fund

“Our aim is to best support municipalities and the Government of National Accord to improve the quality of life for the Libyan people,” said al-Jehaimi.

UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Monday announced that the European Union (EU) has allocated 7 million euros (8.13 million U.S. dollars) to support the Libya Stabilization Fund.

The mission said in a statement that the EU support was announced by the head of the EU delegation to Libya on the seventh board meeting of the Stabilization Facility for Libya.

Co-chaired by the Libyan Minister of Planning al-Taher al-Jehaimi and the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General Maria Ribeiro, the meeting witnessed support from various countries to Libya.

“Our aim is to best support municipalities and the Government of National Accord to improve the quality of life for the Libyan people,” said al-Jehaimi.

Ribeiro said the fund has undertaken 285 projects in different Libyan cities since 2016, including power grids, infrastructure, hospitals and schools.

The Stabilization Fund, which is run by the Libyan Ministry of Planning in cooperation with the UN mission and relies on donations from Western countries, seeks to provide assistance to vulnerable groups in Libya that suffer from military actions and conflicts.

Libya’s UN-backed government in April allocated 5 million dollars to support the fund.

Earlier this year, the UN mission launched a humanitarian response plan in Libya, seeking to raise 313 million dollars to assist over 1 million Libyans.
