Aphrodite sculpture from Libya found in Geneva along other artifacts
Nine artifacts were confiscated in Switzerland by the Geneva Investigations Bureau, including three sculptures from Libya, Syria and Yemen.
One of the stolen artifacts is allegedly a sculpture for Aphrodite – the Greek goddess of love and beauty – looted from Libya while the others were some artifacts and sculptures taken from Syria’s Palmyra and from Yemen.
The Geneva Investigations Bureau said they found them in Geneva’s free=trade ports between 2009 and 2010, even before the Arab Spring of 2011 or the existence of IS.
“Customs annual inspection found it possible that those sculptures could be looted from somewhere and ordered archaeological inspection by some archaeologists who proved the stealing act.
The sculpture of Aphrodite’s head, which was stolen from Libya, goes back to 1 BC, while the other two sculptures date back to before 3 BC from Palmyra, Syria.
