Libya needs stronger support in security and migration issues

National leaders meeting in Brussels on 15 December called on the EU to boost its effort to strengthen Libya’s security.
The EU’s naval mission in the central Mediterranean – EUNAVFOR MED, dubbed ‘Sophia’ – will continue its training of Libya’s coastguard, while parallel initiatives “need to be taken to offer assisted voluntary return opportunities” to migrants stranded in the country, they said.
The European Commission will propose new mechanisms to help the migrants return to their countries of origin, which are mainly across sub-Saharan Africa.
