Kobler: Only military units under Presidential Council will be armed
The United Nations delegate to Libya, Martin Kobler, said only the “military units” under the command of the Presidential Council will be eligible for arming, pointing out that the UNSMIL is exerting efforts to create a unified army in Libya with joint military operations under the command of the Presidential Council to fight ISIS.
Kobler spoke to Al-Ahram Al-Arabi newspaper in Egypt on Tuesday saying that the Presidential Council is moving slowly but is making progress.
“Adding members to the High Council of State has been requested by the Speaker of the HoR, Aqilah Saleh, as he wanted it to have more members to become more comprehensive.” Kobler indicated.
Libya is not going to solve the problems of 40 years of dictatorship in one single day, Kobler explained, adding that Libya has never had strong institutions in history as Muamar Gaddafi ruled the country for 40 years with no state institutions.
“Yet, I’m still optimistic.” Kobler commented, saying it will take time, but regarding the humanitarian situation in Libya, my patience has come to an end. Libyans need electricity, security, and a “more human life”.
“The political agreement was signed and we will not review its articles again.”
