Syria’s new leader makes first Turkey visit

Syria’s transitional president Ahmad al-Sharaa will make his first visit to Turkey on Tuesday following an invitation from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish Presidency announced on Monday.
The high-level meeting aims to strengthen bilateral relations and explore avenues for Syria’s reconstruction, according to Fahrettin Altun, the Turkish presidency’s communications director.
“President Erdogan and President al-Sharaa will discuss critical developments in Syria and explore joint initiatives for economic rebuilding and sustainable security,” Altun said in a statement posted on X.
The talks will also focus on potential Turkish support for Syria’s transitional government in international forums, marking a significant step in diplomatic relations between the neighbouring countries.
The visit comes as Syria seeks to rebuild following years of conflict, with Turkey positioned as a key regional partner in the reconstruction process.
