Iran urges Ukraine to cease alleged support of Syrian militants
Iran’s Foreign Ministry has called on Ukraine to end what it describes as support for armed groups in Syria, calling such actions a violation of international counter-terrorism commitments.
Mojtaba Damirchilu, Head of the Foreign Ministry’s Eurasia Department, cited reports of alleged Ukrainian arms trafficking and militant support in Syria. He characterised these activities as contrary to international norms and “immoral”.
“Experience demonstrates that cooperation with militant groups endangers global security and promotes violence worldwide”, Damirchilu stated.
The comments follow Russian Foreign Intelligence Service claims that NATO countries and Ukraine were allegedly planning to stage chemical weapons incidents in Syria to discredit Damascus and Moscow at the UN.
Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova suggested recent escalations in Syria showed “Ukrainian involvement”.
On 27 November, Jabhat al-Nusra launched an offensive in northern Syria targeting government-held villages and military facilities, prompting a response from Syrian forces.
