Opposition forces claim leadership reshuffle in Syrian capital

The Military Operations Department has announced that President Bashar al-Assad has left Damascus. In an official statement, they declared the Syrian capital to be “without President Assad’s presence.”
The statement continued: “This marks a significant moment for displaced persons and detainees, potentially enabling their return home after an extended period.”
The announcement further stated: “Following half a century of Baath Party governance and 13 years of conflict and displacement, we are declaring on 8 December 2024 what we consider to be the conclusion of one era and the beginning of another in Syria.”
