Turkish military buildup near Kobani raises regional tensions

American officials have reported significant Turkish military movements near the Syrian city of Kobani, according to the Wall Street Journal, suggesting potential operations in Kurdish-controlled areas.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that US-led mediation efforts for a permanent truce in Manbij and Kobani have failed, citing Turkish reluctance to accept terms regarding the safe relocation of fighters and civilians.

The Department of Political Affairs spokesman Obeida Arnaout emphasised that Kurdish communities remain “an integral part of the Syrian fabric” whilst asserting the interim government’s authority.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdul Rahman indicated preparations for a potential Turkish offensive. The situation underscores tensions between Washington and Ankara over the SDF’s status.
