UN Secretary General appoints a new delegate to Libya

The new delegate to Libya, Salam Fayyad

The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, has appointed a Palestinian politician, Salam Fayyad, in the post of the Head of the UNSMIL and the UN delegate to Libya to replace the German diplomat, Martin Kobler.

This appointment was announced by Guterres in an official statement issued and circulated on social media.

The Palestinian politician, Salam Fayyad is known as a businessman and as a closely tied person to the US, especially that he was an active member of the government of the late Palestinian President, Yaser Arafat.

The appointment came as a surprise as it was hours after the UN delegate Martin Kobler delivered a statement at the UN General Assembly, where he talked about the latest on the Libyan crisis.
