Egypt, France agree Libya should go to elections by end of 2018

A spokesman for Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi said on Sunday that Egypt and France believe that Libya should move toward holding elections this year since there has been “relative progress” in the situation in the country.

In a statement after talks between Al-Sisi and visiting French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian in Cairo, Bassam Radi, the spokesman, said the two sides agreed there was “relative progress” in Libya.

The statement says that there is a need now for speeding up the holding of elections before the end of this year, taking into consideration that the situation in Libya affects the stability and security of the Mediterranean region as a whole.

The UN delegate to Libya Ghassan Salame, proposed last September to the UN Security Council an action plan that included ending 2018 with presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya so the country can rid itself of transitional phases.
