Libya launches Medusa submarine cable project connecting to Europe
The Libyan Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology Company (LPTIC) has launched the “Medusa” submarine cable project, a strategic initiative connecting Libya to Europe via an 8,700-kilometer undersea cable.
High-profile attendees at the launch ceremony included Abdelbaset Al-Baaour, Head of the General Authority for Communications and Information; Youssef Abu Zuwaita, LPTIC Board Chairman; Mahmoud Al-Saqoutari, Mayor of Misrata; and telecommunications company officials.
According to LPTIC, this project marks a significant advancement for Libya’s telecommunications sector by connecting the country to major global internet service providers. The cable is expected to improve internet quality and speed in Tripoli, Misurata, and Benghazi while supporting 5G applications, data centers, and cloud computing capabilities.
Beyond technical improvements, the Medusa cable will enhance digital service delivery to citizens and strengthen data governance within sovereign and public institutions, contributing to Libya’s national digital transformation efforts.
