The European Union’s Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, has reiterated the EU’s firm support for Libya’s municipal elections, stressing the need to safeguard their freedom and integrity.

In recent remarks, Orlando underlined that elections are a fundamental democratic right and called on all stakeholders to ensure the process remains free, fair and inclusive across the country.

“The European Union stands ready to continue providing technical and logistical support to the High National Election Commission (HNEC) to help deliver credible and transparent polls,” Orlando said.

Some local reports have alleged the suspension of voting in certain cities and incidents targeting electoral offices, although these claims have not been officially confirmed. Orlando has consistently emphasised the importance of protecting voter rights and holding accountable anyone who seeks to undermine the democratic process.

The EU has been providing assistance to Libya’s electoral authorities for several years, working closely with the HNEC to strengthen electoral procedures and build public confidence in the outcome.
