Libyans rally in solidarity with Palestinians after flotilla attack

Crowds gathered this evening in Algeria Square, central Tripoli, to denounce Israel’s assault on the “Flotilla of Steadfastness” as it attempted to reach Gaza with humanitarian aid.
Protesters chanted slogans affirming unwavering support for the Palestinian people and rejecting what they described as repeated Israeli violations aimed at blocking life-saving assistance to the enclave. They called for freedom and justice, emphasising that Libya stands firmly beside the people of Gaza in their struggle against aggression.
Flotilla of Steadfastness
The humanitarian flotilla brought together activists from many countries and carried symbolic relief supplies along with messages of solidarity. Its mission was to challenge the blockade imposed on Gaza for more than a decade.
On Wednesday, Israeli naval forces intercepted the flotilla in international waters, diverting some vessels to the port of Ashdod and detaining passengers, including environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg.
Organisers accused Israel of using excessive force, reporting that naval units deployed water cannons and ramming tactics. Israeli authorities defended the move as necessary to enforce the blockade.
The incident has provoked widespread condemnation and accusations of violating international humanitarian and maritime law.
