UN mission voices deep concern over killing of Saif al-Islam

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya has expressed grave concern over the killing of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, warning that the incident highlights the urgent need to address similar acts of violence across the country.
In a statement issued on Wednesda, United Nations Support Mission in Libya said the killing underlines the pressing requirement to confront all unlawful killings nationwide and to prevent further deterioration of the security situation.
The mission called on the relevant Libyan authorities to urgently conduct a swift, transparent and credible investigation to identify those responsible and ensure they are held to account.
UNSMIL also urged all parties to exercise restraint and to avoid any actions or rhetoric that could inflame tensions or lead to further instability.
Reiterating its long-standing position, the UN mission stressed that a comprehensive political settlement remains essential to achieving lasting stability and sustainable development in Libya, noting that accountability and the rule of law are critical pillars of any viable political solution.
