Two killed in renewed clashes near Libyan–Nigerien frontier

An armed group operating in southern Libya has reported deadly clashes along the Libyan–Nigerien border, in a statement sent exclusively to Libyan Express.

According to the statement, the confrontations took place on 24 and 25 February at several points along the south-western frontier.

The group, which calls itself the Operations Room for the Liberation of Southern Libya, alleged that forces affiliated with Khalifa Haftar were involved in the fighting.

It said the clashes began after opposing forces approached what it described as one of its logistical positions near the border area, leading to direct exchanges of fire with a unit stationed there.

The group reported that two of its members were killed, while others were wounded or captured. There has been no immediate comment from Haftar’s command regarding the allegations.

In the statement provided to Libyan Express, the group linked the incidents to ongoing disputes over control of border routes in Libya’s south-west. It said its forces remain deployed across sections of the southern frontier and that security operations are continuing.

The statement also addressed individuals detained during what it referred to as the “Toum Gate” operation on 31 January. It said procedures were under way regarding those detained and indicated that arrangements were being considered in coordination with community representatives.

Southern Libya’s vast border regions have long been characterised by fragile security conditions and competing claims of authority. Independent verification of developments in remote desert areas remains difficult.
