Aguila: Hammad government remains legitimate

House Speaker endorses UN plan but insists parliament-backed government is legitimate

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, has welcomed the briefing delivered by the UN Special Envoy to Libya, Hanna Tetteh, before the Security Council.

He commended her call for the formation of a new unified government within two months to oversee preparations for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections.

Saleh described the Envoy’s announcement as a vital step towards unifying the executive authority and reinforcing Libyan cohesion, reiterating the House’s support for measures that would consolidate state institutions, safeguard national sovereignty, and fulfil the aspirations of citizens for stability, development and prosperity.

He further underlined that the government currently led by Osama Hammad remains the legitimate authority mandated by the House of Representatives, having secured its formal vote of confidence.
