Aguila Questions Italian Support for Unity Government

The Speaker of Libya’s House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, has questioned Italy’s continued backing of the Government of National Unity (GNU) in an interview with Italian news agency Nova.

Saleh called on Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to recognise the parallel eastern-based government led by Osama Hamad. He emphasised the need for international support in establishing a new unified government, stating that once a unified council president receives parliamentary confidence, “all parties, including the Italian government, should support the executive authority.”

The parliamentary speaker criticised the current GNU administration, led by Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, claiming its mandate had expired and arguing it had failed to deliver on key promises, including the unification of Libya’s military forces.

“The conditions no longer support the GNU’s continuation,” Saleh said, describing the current administration as “ineffective.” He expressed optimism about United Nations support for forming a new unified government structure.

The statements come amid ongoing political divisions in Libya, where rival governments continue to compete for legitimacy and international recognition.
