Al-Serraj calls for lifting arms embargo and release of frozen assets
The Head of the UN-backed Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Serraj has called on the international community to help Libya bolster its fight against terrorism on Sunday, urging the lifting of an arms embargo and release of funds that have remained frozen under U.N. sanctions since the toppling of dictator Muamar Gaddafi in 2011.
Speaking at the Arab League in Cairo, Al-Serraj, Prime Minister of the U.N.-backed Government of National Accord, said Libyans were suffering and needed both the arms and assets to battle the extremist ISIS militias.
“It doesn’t make sense that the international community supports our war against terrorism, and forbids us from arming ourselves,” Al-Serraj said in his speech at the Arab League meeting.
