Amazigh council rejects Libya’s draft constitution
The Supreme Council of the Amazigh of Libya has formally rejected the proposed constitution put forward by the Constitution Drafting Committee, labelling it as “flawed” in an official statement.
The council stated the draft was developed under duress and without Amazigh participation, announcing they would boycott any referendum in their regions and consider further measures should referendum calls continue.
In their statement, the council emphasised that the draft neither met constitutional standards nor achieved necessary consensus. They called for the establishment of an agreed legal framework, UN mission involvement in electoral law discussions, and inclusive dialogue amongst all political parties.
This stance contrasts with Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dabaiba’s recent statements favouring the constitutional process. During a meeting with Constitutional Assembly members, Dabaiba criticised what he termed attempts to obstruct the constitutional referendum, characterising such actions as contrary to establishing a state of law and institutions.
