Amazigh demands put Al-Menfi’s leadership to the test​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

A delegation from the Amazigh Movement Coordination Committee met with Presidential Council President Mohamed Al-Menfi on March 14, presenting demands focused on cultural recognition, linguistic rights and greater political representation, according to the Libyan News Agency.

The delegation, comprising members of the Supreme Council of the Amazigh of Libya alongside mayors, notables and community elders from Amazigh municipalities, sought implementation of laws guaranteeing their rights as a fundamental component of Libyan society. Specific demands included incorporating the Amazigh language into educational curricula and official media.

Al-Menfi responded by emphasising national cohesion, calling for respect for all social components across Libya’s regions and stressing that the country’s future depends on unity and collective effort. He maintained that national interests must take precedence.

The growing prominence of the Amazigh movement represents a critical test for western Libya’s political establishment. How authorities engage with these demands will significantly impact regional stability – either through successful integration and containment or potentially triggering deeper divisions that could escalate to dangerous levels of conflict.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
