AU delegation signals backing for Libya’s Transit Corridors Project

Tripoli talks highlight AU interest in Libya’s regional connectivity plan

A senior African Union delegation has expressed support for the Libya Africa Transit Corridors Project during a meeting held on 11 November at the headquarters of the Libya Africa Investment Portfolio (LAIP) in Tripoli.

The meeting was attended by LAIP’s Chairman and Director of Strategic Planning, alongside representatives from several African Union bodies, including the Standing Committee for Monitoring and Implementing Agenda 2063 at the Libyan Council of Ministers, the African Union Development Agency – NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD), and members of the Five-Member Committee of the AU’s Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC).

During the discussions, LAIP provided an overview of its operations in Libya and across the African continent, detailing the activities of its subsidiary companies and outlining its main strategic projects. The presentation focused in particular on the Libya Africa Transit Corridors Project, which aims to link the ports of Misrata and Benghazi with transport routes extending deeper into sub-Saharan Africa.

According to the briefing, the project is intended to create a trade and logistics pathway connecting African markets to Europe, strengthen Libya’s role as a regional transit hub, and support economic and spatial development. LAIP also reviewed the work of the Joint High Committee overseeing the project’s planning and implementation, whose members include representatives from the Ministry of Transport and other government institutions.

Delegation members welcomed the project and highlighted its potential importance for regional connectivity. They noted that various African Union bodies would continue to follow the initiative and provide support where appropriate, including through technical and financial cooperation.

Officials also confirmed that the project is set to be included in the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA), which encompasses 69 priority infrastructure projects identified by the African Union Commission as key to advancing development across the continent.
