Dam readiness raised amid thunderstorm warnings in western Libya
Libya’s parliament-appointed government has ordered round-the-clock monitoring of dams as forecasts warn of thunderstorms and possible localised flooding in western parts of the country.
Rain is expected across parts of the north-west and south-west over the next two days, with warnings of water accumulation and flash flooding along seasonal watercourses.
The Ministry of Water Resources outlined the precautions on Sunday, instructing operators to open dam gates when necessary, including during emergencies, to protect the structures and surrounding areas.
As part of the heightened preparedness for the rainy season, operators must monitor reservoir levels and stored water volumes, take readings and immediately report any emergency to the relevant authorities.
