Misurata leaders back Dbeibah in high-level meeting

Majority of Misurata’s key actors unite in support of government

Misurata’s political and social heavyweights rallied behind Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah on Friday, closing ranks in a show of support that underscores the city’s continued influence over western Libya’s fragile political balance.

The meeting, held at the Misurata Seaside Youth House, brought together a cross-section of the city’s power structure, including elders, municipal leaders, and senior military and social figures, for what participants described as a coordinated review of the country’s political trajectory at a sensitive moment.

According to attendees who spoke to Libyan Express, the discussion produced broad alignment in favour of the Government of National Unity, with participants backing Dbeibah’s handling of the current phase and emphasising the need to preserve stability in an otherwise fragmented national landscape.

That alignment matters. Misurata is not just another Libyan city; it is a political and economic centre of gravity whose internal consensus often signals, and at times shapes, wider shifts across western Libya. When its key actors move in the same direction, others tend to take note.

Those present included Mohammed Al-Rajoubi, head of the city’s Council of Elders, alongside adviser Khalifa Al-Zawawi and Sheikh Ibrahim bin Ghsheir, among others, reflecting a mix of traditional authority and newer political influence.

Participants framed their support in pragmatic terms, pointing to the need to sustain institutional continuity, prevent further fragmentation, and deliver incremental improvements in services and living conditions, issues that continue to weigh heavily on public sentiment.

Still, the message from Misurata was less about endorsement for its own sake than about consolidation. In a political environment defined by competing centres of power and stalled national processes, the city’s leadership appears to be signalling that, for now, stability remains the priority.
