Insulin now dispensed via national ID in new health initiative

Health ministry rolls out nationwide insulin dispensing platform

The Ministry of Health on Sunday officially launched the National System for the Dispensing and Monitoring of Insulin for diabetes patients, under the directives of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.

According to a statement by the Ministry, the first phase of the system has been rolled out across 73 centres nationwide. The new electronic mechanism links the dispensing process to the patient’s national identification number and mobile phone number. The system aims to ensure that treatment is provided according to actual medical need and under the supervision of a specialist doctor, while preventing duplicate prescriptions from multiple facilities and guaranteeing that medication reaches those entitled to it without leakage.

Deputy Minister of Health, Mohamed Al-Ghuj, stressed that this step represents a foundational move towards the digitisation of the health sector. He explained that the project will create an electronic health file and a unique health number for each patient, enabling the monitoring of treatment pathways and ensuring the sustainability of vital medical supplies.

The statement added that the Ministry’s Pharmacy Department will oversee the dispensing mechanism and monitor both stock levels and future needs. The project has been implemented in cooperation with the Health Insurance Fund and the Emergency Medicine and Support Centre.
