Khaled Haftar signs military cooperation agreement with Jordan

Libya’s eastern command strengthens defence ties with Jordan

Field Marshal Khaled Haftar, Chief of the General Staff affiliated with the eastern-based General Command in Libya, has signed a joint security and military cooperation agreement with Major General Yousef Huneiti, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Jordanian Armed Forces.

The agreement was signed on Sunday at the headquarters of the Jordanian Armed Forces in Amman, following a round of talks attended by senior military officials from both sides.

In a statement issued via its official channels, the General Command said the agreement comes within the framework of strengthening cooperation in security and military fields and opening broader prospects for joint coordination, in a manner that supports regional stability.

The Jordanian Armed Forces said in a statement carried by the state news agency Petra that the agreement aims to enhance bilateral coordination, expand areas of military training, and facilitate the exchange of expertise and knowledge, as part of cooperation programmes implemented with a number of allied and partner militaries.

During the meeting, Haftar and Huneiti discussed ways to advance joint military coordination and cooperation, including the exchange of expertise in training and capacity-building, with the aim of improving the efficiency of the armed forces in both countries.

The two sides also received briefings on key aspects of modernisation and development within the Jordanian Armed Forces, as well as the challenges posed by the regional security environment, according to Petra.

Haftar praised the level of cooperation between the two sides and highlighted the historical ties between Libya and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, stressing the importance of strengthening military and security cooperation to address current regional challenges, including through the coordination of joint exercises.

For his part, Huneiti underscored the importance of enhancing joint military cooperation in a way that serves shared strategic interests and contributes to regional security and stability. He also commended Haftar’s role in restructuring and developing Libya’s armed forces in line with modern military practices.

The meeting was attended by a number of senior Jordanian military officers and the Libyan military attaché in Amman. Earlier, Haftar was received at the headquarters of the Jordanian Armed Forces with an official ceremony, including a guard of honour.
