Khoms Port set for upgrade with new 154-ton Liebherr crane

The Libyan Ports Company has signed a contract for the acquisition of a 154-ton Liebherr mobile harbour crane, marking a major step in the ongoing modernisation of Libya’s port infrastructure. The crane will be deployed at Khoms Port to significantly improve its container handling capabilities.
The agreement was concluded on 15 July in Rostock, Germany, with the contract signed by the Chairman of the Libyan Ports Company’s Board of Directors, together with Liebherr’s General Manager of Sales and Area Sales Manager.
In a statement issued following the signing, the Libyan Ports Company said the new crane forms part of its broader strategy to develop and upgrade the nation’s ports in response to the increasing size and technical demands of modern container ships. The company stressed the importance of acquiring equipment with greater reach, height, and lifting capacity to meet current international maritime standards.
The move is expected to enhance the operational efficiency of Khoms Port, enabling it to accommodate the latest generation of vessels with advanced specifications. This investment, the company noted, reflects its commitment to keeping pace with global trends in port logistics and infrastructure.
Looking ahead, the Libyan Ports Company reaffirmed its intention to continue implementing programmes and projects aimed at boosting the efficiency and performance of port services across the country. These efforts, it said, are central to strengthening Libya’s position as a competitive player in the international shipping and trade sector.
