Lavrov reaffirms Russia’s unchanged stance on Libya’s political divide

Lavrov: Russia maintains ties with both Libyan authorities

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has reiterated that Moscow’s position on Libya remains unchanged, emphasising the country’s ongoing engagement with both principal power centres.

Speaking in Moscow, Lavrov stated that Russia maintains relations with the Libyan National Army (LNA) in the east, noting that “our relationship with them has never been interrupted.”

He also referred to the Government of National Unity (GNU) based in Tripoli, describing it as an interim authority that “was meant to serve for one year but has exceeded that term several times.”

Despite Libya’s prolonged political division, Lavrov said Moscow continues to support “the ongoing dialogue between western and eastern Libya and efforts to reach an agreement on how to coexist within one state.”

The minister further acknowledged that domestic instability continues to obstruct bilateral progress. “The persistent instability in Libya’s internal political situation still prevents the full resumption of practical cooperation projects between our two countries,” he said.

Russia has maintained communication with multiple Libyan actors over recent years, calling for reconciliation and a unified governance framework.

Lavrov’s latest remarks reflect Moscow’s steady diplomatic approach—advocating continued dialogue while remaining cautious amid Libya’s extended transitional period.
