Libya and Algeria sign deal to resume direct flights

Libya’s Civil Aviation Authority has signed an air transport agreement with its Algerian counterpart, alongside a memorandum of understanding paving the way for the resumption of direct flights between the two countries.
According to a statement issued by the Libyan authority, the signing took place at the headquarters of Algeria’s National Civil Aviation Agency in Algiers. The memorandum is expected to enter into force once final procedures are completed by the respective aviation authorities on both sides.
Under the new arrangements, each country will be permitted to operate up to 14 passenger flights per week through approved airlines. The agreement also includes provisions for dedicated air cargo services, marking a significant step towards restoring regular air connectivity between Libya and Algeria.
The move signals renewed efforts to strengthen transport links and facilitate travel and trade between the neighbouring states, following years of disruption.
Direct flights between Algiers and Tripoli have been suspended since January 2016, when Algeria’s Ministry of Transport announced a halt to services until further notice. The latest agreement is expected to reverse that suspension and reopen a key regional air corridor.
