UN supports Libya customs to enhance container monitoring

The Libyan Customs Authority has held talks with a delegation from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) aimed at strengthening cooperation and enhancing customs oversight across the country’s ports and border crossings.
The meeting, which took place at the authority’s headquarters in Tripoli, forms part of ongoing efforts to improve the monitoring of containers and inbound shipments, and to develop inspection systems designed to combat smuggling and other illicit activities.
According to a statement issued by the authority, discussions focused on improving inspection capabilities, upgrading container monitoring systems, and reinforcing mechanisms to track goods entering Libya. The measures are intended to bolster anti-smuggling efforts and strengthen economic security at border points.
During the meeting, the UNODC representative commended the role played by Libya’s Customs Authority in overseeing the movement of containers and goods. The official also highlighted what was described as a noticeable improvement in the performance of container control units and the efforts of customs personnel across Libyan ports.
At the conclusion of the talks, the UN delegation presented the Libyan Customs Authority with specialised equipment for container monitoring, as part of broader technical and operational support aimed at modernising customs control systems nationwide.
The cooperation reflects a wider push to enhance institutional capacity and align Libya’s border management practices with international standards.
