Libyan MP cautions new UN envoy over approach

The newly appointed United Nations Special Representative for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, has been cautioned against following approaches taken by previous UN envoys.
In a press statement, Mohamed Tamer, who represents the southern region in Libya’s House of Representatives, emphasised that negotiations should be limited to key institutional players. “She must rely on the House of Representatives and the State Council as a basis for any solution to the political crisis, without expanding the circle of dialogue with all parties, and limiting herself to the main ones related to the solution,” he stated.
Tamer identified the formation of a new government to oversee forthcoming presidential and parliamentary elections as the primary challenge facing the UN envoy.
He also pointed to additional challenges, including sustaining the ceasefire agreement and implementing a unified national budget. “We are waiting to see how these files will be dealt with and see what she will do,” he added.
