Margham says Haftar’s project requires engagement through force

Mohammed Margham, a former member of Libya’s General National Congress and a political figure associated with the Muslim Brotherhood, has said that dealing with the project led by Khalifa Haftar requires “the same tools he relies on,” referring to armed force.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Margham argued that what he called the “civil state project” does not signify an unarmed or pacifist approach, but rather the establishment of a civilian-led state supported by protective security structures. “There is no state without arms,” he wrote.

He explained that in a “civilian state project,” weapons serve as a safeguard, whereas in what he described as a “military project,” they function as instruments of rule. Margham maintained that the two approaches are fundamentally incompatible and that attempts to bridge them amount to “deception” or “a mirage.”

He concluded by saying that Haftar’s project, as he described it, can only be approached through “the tools used to present it and sustain its expansion,” adding that these tools, in his view, consist primarily of armed force.
