Military operation launched in Zawiya

The Western Coast Military Region has announced a security operation targeting suspected criminal locations in Zawiya and surrounding coastal areas, urging residents to avoid suspicious locations.
In a Saturday night Facebook notice, the military command called for public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities, stating their forces possess “all necessary capabilities” to combat organised crime.
The operation follows recent security incidents in Zawiya, including mid-December clashes that damaged the city’s oil refinery tanks, forcing the National Oil Corporation to declare force majeure. The area has reportedly faced challenges with smuggling and trafficking activities.
Zawiya, a coastal city west of Tripoli, has experienced periodic security disruptions and armed confrontations. The recent refinery incident highlighted ongoing stability challenges in the region.
