New Libyan-Saudi telecoms agreement aims to boost Africa connectivity

Libya’s Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology Holding Company has signed a preliminary memorandum of understanding with the Saudi firm Technology Link Services for Telecommunications, in a move aimed at strengthening regional cooperation in the telecoms sector.
The agreement was signed on Thursday during a meeting between the chairman of the Libyan Telecommunications Holding Company, Youssef Ibrahim Hussein, and a Saudi delegation led by Ali bin Misfer Al-Qahtani.
According to a statement, the talks focused on expanding cooperation in telecommunications and information technology, as well as exploring opportunities to enhance regional partnerships in line with Libya’s digital development priorities.
The preliminary MoU sets out a framework for collaboration in several areas, including technical studies to develop national and urban telecommunications networks, assessments of market demand for transmission capacities, and the formulation of a regional connectivity strategy linking Libya with neighbouring African countries.
Officials said the initiative is intended to strengthen Libya’s position as a regional communications gateway to Africa, while supporting broader economic development.
The company noted that the agreement reflects a shared commitment by both sides to building a strategic partnership aimed at upgrading Libya’s digital infrastructure and expanding regional cooperation in line with the country’s national digital vision.
Speaking at the signing, Mr Hussein said the telecommunications sector was entering a new phase that required closer coordination, wider exchanges of expertise and the launch of development projects capable of enhancing infrastructure readiness.
He added that cooperation with regional institutions was a central pillar in keeping pace with rapid global digital transformation and ensuring sustainable growth in the sector.
