Supreme Council of Presidencies launched

The body was unveiled in Tripoli during a meeting that included Mohammed Menfi, Head of the Presidential Council; his deputy Abdullah Al-Lafi; the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah; and the Head of the High Council of State, Mohammed Takala.
According to a statement from the Presidential Council’s media office, the new structure will focus on developing a unified strategy for political, economic, and security decision-making, while also harmonising official messaging between the country’s key institutions.
It added that the participants reaffirmed their commitment to overcoming internal divisions, acting “responsibly and constructively,” and supporting efforts aimed at stability, development, and the consolidation of a unified Libyan state capable of protecting its sovereignty and serving its citizens.
A source previously told The Libya Observer that the three sides had been planning to establish a joint framework to facilitate the issuance of major decisions — including the appointment of a General Commander of the Army, senior military promotions, retirements, and potential cabinet reshuffles. Such steps, the source noted, could prove contentious if taken unilaterally by any single institution.
The source added that the new council is also intended to unify military and security forces in western Libya under a single command, strengthening their collective position in periodic negotiations — particularly those held in Italy under US auspices.
