Tetteh: Women’s participation key to a stable and just Libya

Hanna Tetteh: Libya needs all its women at the decision-making table

Libya’s UN Special Representative, Hanna Tetteh, has called on Libyan women to take an active role in shaping the future of their country, stressing that every woman’s voice matters in building a stable, inclusive Libya.

Speaking during an online open dialogue on Friday, Tetteh addressed 239 Libyan participants via Zoom in a session that explored key national issues—ranging from election options and political accountability to ways of increasing the participation of women, youth, and people with disabilities in the political process.

The session featured powerful testimonies from Libyan women, including one former candidate in municipal elections who described her experience as “terrifying.” She shared that she had been subjected to online smear campaigns, the misuse of personal photos, indirect and direct threats, and pressure from certain figures to withdraw from the race.

Tetteh responded with words of encouragement:

“I thank you for your courage and determination. Libya doesn’t just need your voice—it needs all Libyan women to take part in the national conversation and contribute to the decisions that shape the future. Some may try to silence women, but political participation isn’t a competition—it’s a responsibility we all share for the progress of society.”

The UN mission reaffirmed its support for increasing women’s participation in Libya’s political life and ensuring that their contributions are heard, respected, and protected.
