The UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame said Monday that most Libyans see Khalifa Haftar as the new Gaddafi and that is why they reject his attempts at military rule.

Salame added in an interview with France Inter Radio that Haftar is ruling with an iron fist in the areas under his control.

He also indicated that Haftar has ambitions that go beyond fighting terrorism and this is a problem for his supporters.

Salame said France recognizes the Government of National Accord as the only legitimate body and is keen on keeping its relations with it, but it also supports Haftar in his war on terrorism in western and southern Libya.
