UN raises alarm over mass graves at trafficking sites
Migrant tragedy uncovered in Libya desert

Security forces have discovered two mass graves containing at least 59 bodies at human trafficking sites in Libya’s Al Wahat and Kufra regions, prompting concern from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
The first discovery on 7 February in Al Wahat revealed 19 bodies, whilst authorities found 40 more bodies the following day in Kufra. Some victims showed evidence of gunshot wounds, according to UNSMIL.
Investigators found the graves during raids on trafficking operations that led to the rescue of 76 migrants. Authorities arrested three suspects – one Libyan national and two foreign citizens – who face charges of detention and torture.
Muhammad Al-Fadhil, head of Kufra’s security operations, said search efforts continue, estimating the total number of buried victims could reach 70. The suspects remain in custody pending investigation.
UNSMIL reports the victims had endured months of severe abuse and torture whilst being held by traffickers. The mission has called for:
– A thorough investigation into the deaths
– Prosecution of those responsible
– Immediate release of surviving detainees
– Access to essential services for survivors
The discoveries highlight ongoing concerns about migrant trafficking in the region, with UNSMIL describing the graves as “a chilling reminder” of the need to protect vulnerable migrants’ rights.
