UN sets out new committee plan for Libya electoral path

The United Nations mission in Libya has announced in an official statement a comprehensive new political initiative centred around six key elements aimed at paving the way for national elections.
At a press briefing, UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) officials outlined the core components of the plan, which include the establishment of an advisory committee, government unification efforts, comprehensive dialogue initiatives, economic reforms, security sector integration, and national reconciliation measures.
The proposed advisory committee will comprise no more than 30 members, with women guaranteed at least 30 per cent representation.
According to mission officials, this committee’s primary mandate will be to address contentious issues within the 6+6 laws and develop an electoral roadmap.
Officials emphasised that the advisory committee is not intended to replace existing governmental bodies, including the House of Representatives and State Council. Instead, it will serve in a consultative capacity, developing proposals for government unification and addressing the future role of the Presidential Council.
The mission clarified that whilst the committee will not directly form the new government, it will establish the necessary standards, frameworks, and guarantees for its formation. This distinction underscores the committee’s role as a facilitator rather than an executive body.
