Women’s ministry calls for swift action on violence surge

The Minister of State for Women’s Affairs in Libya’s Government of National Unity, Dr Houria Al-Tirmal, has issued a set of directives to agencies under her ministry amid a rise in violent crimes targeting women and children across several Libyan cities.
In a statement published on the ministry’s Facebook page on Tuesday, Al-Tirmal called on women and child protection centres to “enhance their readiness, treat every report with urgency, and provide psychological, social, and legal support without delay.”
She also urged female members of municipal councils to closely monitor cases of abuse, ensure that the voices of women and girls reach the relevant authorities, and act as a “vital link between victims and protection mechanisms.”
Safeguarding the family structure
The minister further stressed the role of social affairs offices and specialised social workers in preserving family cohesion, understanding the root causes of violence, and guiding both victims and families towards pathways that protect their lives and uphold their rights.
“Each of these institutions is an essential pillar in ensuring the safety of women and children,” Al-Tirmal said. “Any hesitation or disregard could cost a life. Protecting women and children is a national, humanitarian, and moral duty. The Ministry of State for Women’s Affairs will remain an active partner to all concerned institutions and will follow every case to ensure a safer society.”
