Putin to withdraw substantial part of Russian troops from Syria

Russian troops in Syria will begin partial withdrawal from war torn country after Russian president arrived there on Monday, in an unannounced visit.

Russian president Vladimir Putin was met with Syrian counterpart Bashar Assad as he arrived at the Russian Hmeimim air base, according to Interfax news agency.

Putin said to Russian servicemen in Syria “you are going home to your families victorious” according to Interfax

He had already declared in March 2016 that he was planning to pull out the majority of Russian troops.

The Russian leader is also due to travel to Egypt and Turkey for talks.
