Protests in Algeria over Tamazight language

Algeria’s Berber protested a decision by the Algerian parliament to discard an adjustment to the country’s 2018 budget that would allow schools to teach the Tamazight language.

The protests called for the government to assign state funds to be used to protect and support their native language.

Activists and students have rallied in defiance against the resolution, which they say highlights the state’s rejection of the language and identity of its Berber citizens.
