Najla Al-Mangoush, Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Government of National Unity, has authorized Khaled Al-Sadiq to take over as Libyan ambassador to the United States in lieu of Wafa Bughaighis’s refusal to step down from her post.

According to a letter from Al-Mangoush to Khalid Al-Sadiq, a member of the Libyan Embassy’s personnel and financial supervisor in Washington. ” Based on the expiry of the performance’s legal validity.  Wafa Bughaighis has served overseas since 30 May 2021, and our prior letter asking for the transfer of diplomatic duties has been followed. Despite being officially informed, Ms Bughaighis refused to comply with our instructions.”

“On the basis of the foregoing, we issued Decree No. 211 of 2021 referring the person concerned to a legal resignation, considering that the person concerned is not legally an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and following the adoption of the aforementioned resolution, as well as the illegitimacy of her, stay in the Embassy in accordance with Libyan and American laws,” she added.

“As a result, I hereby authorized Khaled Al-Sadiq to promptly obtain from the authorities involved the duties of the Embassy, and carry out its responsibilities and notify us of them,” she concluded.

The decision was made in response to Bughaighis’ willingness to give up her responsibilities and return to the nation once her overseas career ended, thus terminating her career with the Ministry’s diplomatic services.

The letter sent to the Libyan Embassy in Washington reaffirmed the selection of Khaled Al-on Sadiq’s behalf of the Embassy as its successor, stating once again that Bughaighis’ continued presence in the Embassy was unlawful.
