Government takes steps to revive Tripoli railway

The Libyan Ministry of Transport announced on Monday that discussions have taken place on launching the long-delayed railway project in Tripoli, as part of wider efforts to upgrade the country’s public transport network.
According to the Ministry, Mohamed Al-Shahoubi, Minister of Transport and Financial Advisor to the Tripoli-based Prime Minister, met with the Chairman of Libyan Railroads to review mechanisms for initiating implementation.
As a first step, Libyan Railroads has been instructed to issue a tender to a specialised consulting firm to prepare the required technical studies and designs.
The Ministry said the project forms part of the government’s infrastructure development plan aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion in the capital, while improving the overall quality of life and the services available to citizens.
