Journalist criticises culture minister over Benghazi Arab Capital of Culture bid

A leading Libyan journalist has publicly criticised the country’s Minister of Culture following reports that Benghazi was not endorsed as a candidate for Arab Capital of Culture 2026.

In a statement published on his personal Facebook page, Jibril Al-Obeidi accused Mabrouka Toghi, Culture Minister in the Government of National Unity headed by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, of rejecting a proposal to nominate Benghazi for the prestigious regional title.

Al-Obeidi further alleged that the minister declined to participate in celebrations marking Kuwait City as the Arab Capital of Culture for 2025.

The journalist framed his remarks around issues of national and cultural identity, writing: “Libya will remain an Arab nation.” He added that this would remain the case “despite anyone who ignores its identity” and “despite those who futilely attempt to erase it.”

The Arab Capital of Culture initiative, launched under the umbrella of the Arab League in cooperation with UNESCO cultural programmes, is designed to showcase the heritage and creative industries of participating cities across the Arab world.

At the time of publication, the Ministry of Culture had not issued an official response to the statements.

The comments have prompted debate across Libyan social media platforms, with supporters and critics weighing in on the country’s cultural direction and the symbolism attached to regional cultural representation.
