Libya, Mozambique Advance Major Rice Project

A delegation from the Libya Africa Investment Portfolio (LAIP) met with Mozambican officials in Maputo yesterday to advance its rice project in the country.
During discussions at the Investment and Export Promotion Agency headquarters, officials reviewed plans for the project, including a proposal for new land allocation with different soil and water characteristics than the original site.
The delegation also held meetings with Mozambique’s Attorney General to discuss legal procedures related to the project’s cultivation, processing, and packaging components.
The Libyan Embassy in Maputo participated in the discussions between the two parties.
LAIP representatives reviewed the proposed new site conditions during the meetings.
The discussions addressed implementation aspects of the bilateral agricultural project, with further details expected to follow.
Mozambique has 36 million hectares of arable land, with approximately 15% under cultivation. The country’s water resources include the Zambezi, Limpopo, and Save river systems, while its 2,700 km coastline provides access to maritime trade routes.
The country serves as a transit point for landlocked Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi, and holds membership in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Its population exceeds 30 million.
