Tripoli International Airport runway construction progresses
The Media Office of the Government of National Unity announced on Friday, 19 September, that work is continuing on the first asphalt layer of the main runway at Tripoli International Airport.
The airport, located around 21 kilometres south of Tripoli, was damaged during the 2014 armed clashes. The runway under construction has a length of 2,880 metres and a width of 45 metres.
According to the announcement, the paving of the main runway is part of preparations for the reopening of the airport.
At present, air traffic in Tripoli is limited to Mitiga Airport, situated approximately 10 kilometres east of the city centre.
Contractor changes
The Italian Aeneas Consortium, awarded the reconstruction contract in 2017, was responsible for the project until late 2024.
Work came to a halt after payment delays, and responsibility for implementation has since been transferred to another contractor.
