Trump opens negotiations with Iran, catching Netanyahu off guard

US President Donald Trump has launched direct talks with Iran aimed at preventing nuclear weapons development, a move that reportedly surprised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his recent Washington visit.
According to multiple sources, Netanyahu travelled to Washington seeking support for military strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities, only to learn shortly before a joint press appearance that the US had initiated negotiations with Tehran.
The negotiations, which have already progressed through three rounds of talks in just three weeks, focus on a framework similar to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that Trump abandoned during his first term. The proposed new agreement would extend duration to 25 years, tighten verification, and expand so-called sunset clauses.
Key points under discussion include Iran limiting its uranium enrichment to 3.67%, reducing stockpiles, and accepting expanded IAEA oversight in exchange for substantial sanctions relief. However, significant obstacles remain, including Iran’s insistence on maintaining enrichment capability versus Netanyahu’s demand for “zero enrichment” and complete dismantling of nuclear infrastructure.
Whilst negotiations continue, regional tensions remain high. Iranian leadership reportedly remains deeply concerned that Netanyahu may launch a strike – deal or no deal. The Pentagon has meanwhile deployed six B-2 bombers to Diego Garcia and positioned two aircraft carriers in the region.
