Martin Kobler unveils intention to decentralize Libya’s army
The United Nations delegate to Libya, Martin Kobler, disclosed that the Libyan army could be decentralized, meaning that it will be region-oriented – an idea aimed at easing the political gridlock surrounding an internationally-backed Government of National Accord (GNA).
Martin Kobler confirmed on Wednesday the reports that say the formation of military councils representing Libya’s western, eastern and southern regions is being discussed.
He spoke to The Associated Press after holding talks with various Libyan figures in Cairo aimed at resolving the rivalry between the UN-backed government in the capital, Tripoli, and illegitimate authorities based in the east.
A key point of contention has been the leadership of the army and the future of Khalifa Haftar, the leader of Dignity Operation in the east. Kobler says his requests for a meeting with Haftart have been denied, without adding any more details.
