Italy on brink of founding filed hospital in Misurata, protected by 200 Italian troops
Italy announced Monday that it is going to deploy some 300 doctors, nurses, and soldiers to Libya to establish a military field hospital at the request of the United Nations-recognized A) in Tripoli.
Sources from Italy reported that the hospital is to be established some 187 kilometers east of Tripoli near the Misurata airport, adding that the hospital will be staffed by 100 doctors and nurses and protected by 200 Italian troops.
“It should be a safe location, but not too far from the battle zone,” Reuters cited a government source as saying.
“Italy has already flown dozens of Libyan fighters to Rome to receive medical treatment,” the source noted, adding “but the hospital will provide more immediate and efficient assistance.”
The deployment of Italian soldiers, while for humanitarian purposes, will nonetheless be the first overt deployment of troops by a Western nation to Libya, Reuters notes.
