ICAO delegation visits Libya to lift aviation ban

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in the Middle East conducted its first visit to Misurata International Airport.

As reported by the Libyan Ministry of Transport, the tour aims to assess the state of civil aviation at the airport in preparation for an audit delegation visit at the end of the year. This visit is also intended to lift the ban on Libyan airports and carriers, according to the ministry.

The Ministry of Transport discussed ways in which the ICAO team can contribute to supporting plans and programs to develop the aviation sector and lift the air embargo with the ICAO team, according to a statement released by Our Government platform, affiliated with the Prime Minister’s Office.

In addition to touring Mitiga International Airport’s passenger terminal, the team was also briefed on ongoing projects that will improve the terminal’s appearance and increase its capacity after a new departure hall was opened and connected to the existing one.

Due to safety and security concerns, the European Commission banned Libyan airlines from flying over member states’ airspace in December 2014.
